Taking the many lessons learned and valuable experiences gained, I discovered how they could be applied in an entirely new setting centered around helping people through one of life’s biggest
transitions.
When my husband and I decided to make the High Country our permanent home, it was more than just a move. After spending so much time here during COVID, we realized how much we cherished the lifestyle: the cool mountain air, the vibrant community, and the endless opportunities to be outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, dancing at outdoor concerts, or simply gathering with friends and neighbors, this place felt like home. It’s a lifestyle we truly adore.

With the move came a career shift into real estate. What I didn’t expect was how much my background in healthcare would become my greatest asset in this field. I spent over 25 years in healthcare, starting as a NICU nurse and eventually moving into management and corporate leadership. In the NICU, I learned to handle high-stress situations, balancing the needs of critically ill infants and their families. That experience taught me to prioritize different needs, communicate clearly, and always keep the end goal of caring for the patient at the center of the process.
As I moved into management, my focus became centered around improving systems and processes to create more efficiency as well as a better experience for employees and our patients.
Earning my Lean Six Sigma Green Belt gave me a deep appreciation for how every part of a process needs to work together for the best outcome. I learned that success starts with a clear message, effective communication, and making sure every system aligns with that overall goal.

My career required me to bridge the gap between C-suite executives and frontline staff—two very different perspectives. I learned how to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life, find common ground, and adapt my approach to fit the situation. In real estate, this means I know how to connect with a wide range of clients, understand their unique needs, and employ the right strategies to achieve the best possible outcome for everyone involved. Real estate in the High Country, especially in the luxury market, is all about having precise systems in place to execute a transaction seamlessly
Because of my leadership experience, negotiation skills, and relationship-focused approach, I’m proud to have quickly earned the trust of clients and established a reputation for professionalism within this community.

My first year in real estate, I listed the first $8.5M listing in our neighborhood here in Banner Elk, I have sold $15.6M in my first year in real estate, and since then, I’ve continued to represent some of the most beautiful and unique properties in the area. My approach is never one-size-fits-all. I treat every client and transaction as unique, drawing on my experience to anticipate needs, solve problems, and deliver results.

The company I work with, Ivester Jackson | Christie's, has been a game changer for me. The support and culture that Lori Ivester and Reed Jackson have created are unmatched. Having direct access to leadership and a team that truly values professionalism and innovation has made all the difference. I know my clients are getting the best marketing, exposure, and service possible, and that’s something I’m proud to stand behind.
Community involvement is at the heart of what I do. From organizing fundraisers for our volunteer fire department to supporting local causes, I believe in actively contributing to the well-being of the High Country. I’m invested in this community and find true joy in helping others experience everything that makes the High Country such an incredible place to live.
North Carolina has always been home for me. I was born and raised in the heart of the state, went to UNC Chapel Hill, and have lived in places like Lake Norman, Charlotte, and now Banner Elk. My family is at the center of my life. My husband’s encouragement and support have meant everything to me, and together we have a blended family of adult children who bring us so much joy.
Outside of work, I love spending time with family and friends, especially outdoors. Whether I’m hiking the mountain trails, dancing at live music events, or just soaking in the scenery, I find so much happiness in the lifestyle this area offers. I also enjoy traveling, trying new foods, and spending time with our goldendoodle. Building relationships and being part of this vibrant community has been one of the greatest treasures of my life.
Sincerely,

Melissa Hilton
